MORE than 900 newborns and children up to seven years old in the Basamuk area of Rai Coast district, Madang, have received free medical services, including vaccinations for  measles, thanks to the Ramu NiCo-owned Basamuk Refinery Health Centre.

Ramu NiCo, through its free community health services, volunteered to provide medical service to the surrounding communities from Sept 22 to Oct 2.

The company realised that measles was increasing, prompting its health team – Supt Dr Meng Ming and nursing officer Paul Konare – to respond. A total of 943 children, seven years old and younger, and 124 mothers were attended to and received medication.
The free medical exercise was one of the largest in the Basamuk area, covering Mindre, Saren, Bobodik, Zanag, Ganglau, Tugiag, Dubal, Buff Balau, Sipoldi and Mingming villages.
Konare said the vaccines were administered to different age groups using different doses aimed at preventing the spread of measles.

“I would like to thank the management of Ramu NiCo and  Meng for the support and logistics in executing the vital services to our locals,” Konare said.

Since its establishment, Ramu NiCo has provided much needed medical services as well as carrying out medical evacuation exercises on numerous occasions. Under the 2013 revised Ramu NiCo project agreement, the company provides K20,000 every year for medical supplies.
